Since my Peace Corps days, I have been aware of the fact that in a global world the threads of human life are so interwoven that no single contact is trivial. Service is an integral part of the Abington Friends experience. In the eighth grade, the service leaning program addresses the social issues of hunger and homelessness in the Greater Philadelphia area. As part of this program, members of the Class of 2012 helped out at Philabundance on Thursday and Friday. Each day, we helped sort 12,000 pounds of donated items. As always, our time proved to be challenging, stimulating, and inspiring.
Over the last seven years, I have been impressed with the staff at Philabundance. Jan Barnett, the coordinator of the volunteer program invariably welcomes us with a smile and introduces us to the faces of hunger through a powerful video. Maria heads up the program in the work area with discipline, determination, hard work, and compassion. The high quality of the staff involvement always makes for a meaningful experience. Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of the high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution of people working together towards common goals. I appreciate Philabundance's commitment to excellence.
Congratulations Philabundance on a job well done!
With respect, gratitude, and appreciation,
