MISSION STATEMENT:
Philabundance works to end hunger and malnutrition in the Delaware Valley by acquiring food and distributing it through organizations serving people in need.
History, Goals, and Key Achievements
Philabundance is a nonprofit organization fighting hunger and malnutrition in the Delaware Valley. It was founded in 1984 as a food rescue organization to help ensure that perishable food that otherwise would have gone to waste was instead provided to people in need. Today, Philabundance provides a full plate of services to almost 600 member agencies, and the people they serve of the more than 900,000 low income residents. These Delaware Valley neighbors are at risk for chronic hunger and malnutrition.
Philabundance is the region’s largest food bank and food rescue organization. We provide food to member agencies in the following ten (10) counties of the Delaware Valley: Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties in Pennsylvania and Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Mercer and Salem Counties in New Jersey. When surveyed, our agencies estimate that approximately 23% of their recipients are children, and 16% are senior citizens. The remaining recipients are parents, caregivers, and single adults—including homeless, mentally ill, and disabled people—who receive support from nonprofit social service agencies.
Philabundance works to fight hunger by collecting food from the Philadelphia Food Distribution Center, wholesalers, distributors, supermarkets, restaurants, local growers, importers, and community organizations. Last year, we acquired 24 million pounds of food and distributed 18 million pounds of food in our service area, and exported 6 million pounds of surplus food to assist other area food banks.
Philabundance collects and distributes food from business, organization and individual food donors to provide food for approximately 65,000 people per week. Our fleet of eight (8) trucks is on the road five days a week distributing items such as meats, vegetables, fruits, breads, dairy products, canned and packaged foods, and prepared meals to help feed those in need.
Philabundance provides the following services:
- Food distribution directly to network agencies, food distribution hubs, and other organizations
- Philabundance Community Kitchen
(Meal production and job training program for low-income individuals)
- Safe Food Handling Training
- Commodity Supplemental Food Program
(Program providing USDA commodities to Seniors and WIC “graduates”)
